The Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges, and Public Petition has decided to invite the Federal Ministry of Works to clarify conflicting documents related to the award of a contract for the rehabilitation of Lafia-Obi-Awe-Tunga roads in Nasarawa State.
The Committee is resolving disputes between the Tunga community, beneficiaries of the project, and Triacta Nig Ltd, the project contractor. The community has petitioned the Committee, alleging that the contractor abandoned the project.
The indigenes of Tunga community, through their lawyer Barr Abubakar Ahmed Usman, claimed that the contractor refused to complete the 118 km road project. They argued that the project’s award letter stated that the construction work should begin in Lafia and end in Tunga.
Barr Usman questioned why Triacta Nig. Ltd would grade and pour laterite on the Tunga road if it was not part of the project. He wondered if it was part of their social responsibility to have done that.
The Deputy Director of Triacta Nig Ltd, Mr. Tayo Korede, responded that the contract agreement stated a different scope of work. According to Korede, the contract agreement specified that the project was for the Kafia-Obi-Awe section, which is 88km.
Senator Imasuen stated that the Ministry of Works, which awarded the contract, would be invited to clarify the discrepancies between the two documents. The Committee wants to determine the position of the contract and resolve the disputes between the community and the contractor.
The Committee will either invite or write to the Ministry of Works to seek clarification on the contract. Senator Imasuen emphasized that the Ministry is best positioned to provide clarification on the conflicting documents.
